河外天文學為當代天文學中最活躍的研究課題之一。本所河外天文研究小組成員研究的課題相當廣泛,從星系團到活躍星系核, 臨近星系到高紅移星系等。我們特別有興趣於星系的形成及演化,星系間交互作用,星系內之星際間物質,活躍星系之活動及星爆。本所河外天文研究小組研究方法運用了多波段觀測,包括電波,紅外線,可見光及 X射線,進階分析技術,及包含了磁流體力學模型的理論研究。
